Biology
Biology Faculty of Science and Technology at Samudra University has four concentrations of science, namely Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, and Ecology. Strategically located in Aceh, this study program has direct access to unique ecosystems in Sumatra, such as tropical rainforests, peat swamps, and coasts, which are rich in biodiversity. This geographical condition allows students and lecturers from the Botany and Zoology concentrations to conduct field research for conservation and bioprospecting, exploring endemic flora and fauna that are not found in other regions. Microbiology students and lecturers also play an important role in the exploration of local microorganisms that have bioactive potential for health and industry. Meanwhile, Ecology students and lecturers focus on ecosystem analysis to understand species interactions and the impact of environmental change.
The primary goal of research is to promote the sustainable use and conservation of local biological resources, as well as to produce bioprospection-based products that may be applied in a variety of fields. This method ensures that this study program is not only focused on the advancement of basic science but also stimulates relevant innovation for the local economy. Commitment to the promotion of bio-entrepreneurship and community empowerment is a distinct added value since local communities and students are prepared with the skills to manage and exploit biological resources autonomously.
Given the vulnerability of the Sumatran ecosystem to climate change, this research program also focuses on tropical ecosystem adaptation, particularly the protection of endemic species. Another uniqueness is the combination of field and laboratory research under four main concentrations, namely Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, and Ecology, allowing a holistic approach from exploration to application. The synergy between the tridharma of higher education and local development makes this study program a research center that has a direct impact on the environment and the community’s economy. These advantages place the Biology Study Program of Samudra University as a center of excellence in the utilization of Sumatra’s biological resources and a pioneer of sustainable innovation.
