Syiah Kuala University (USK) Chancellor Delivers Scientific Oration at Universitas Samudra Graduation Ceremony

Langsa-  Universitas Samudra celebrated the graduation of 622 students. The graduation ceremony commenced with an open session of the university senate in the multipurpose hall on Wednesday (17/5/2023).

Expressing immense pride, the Chancellor of Universitas Samudra commended the graduates for successfully completing their studies. He encouraged them to embrace the philosophy of “lifelong learning” as they embark on their future journeys. Recognizing the challenges in today’s competitive job market, the Chancellor advised, “The knowledge acquired during your time at Universitas Samudra will serve as a valuable asset in your future careers.”

During the open session of the Universitas Samudra senate, distinguished guests were in attendance, including Prof. Dr. Ir. Marwan, the Chancellor of Syiah Kuala University (USK). In his scientific oration titled “Producing Quality Graduates, Creating a Superior Generation,” the Chancellor of USK addressed the significance of preparing the current generation for the future of Indonesia.

Referring to the superior generation of Indonesia, he emphasized the importance of equipping the millennial generation, born between 1980 and the 2000s, for the country’s future. In 2020, the millennial generation accounted for 34% of Indonesia’s population, and their influence is projected to continue until 2035. This demographic bonus presents an opportunity for Indonesia to thrive, with predictions suggesting that the country will become one of the world’s leading economic powers by 2045.

 

The future development of Indonesia in 2045 is supported by four key pillars, as follows:

  1. Human development and mastery of science and technology: This pillar emphasizes the importance of developing human resources equipped with knowledge and expertise in science and technology. It aims to nurture individuals who are capable of adapting to technological advancements and contributing to the country’s progress.
  2. Sustainable economic development: This pillar focuses on achieving economic growth that is environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive, and beneficial for all segments of society. It promotes balanced economic development and the efficient use of resources.
  3. Equitable national development: This pillar aims to ensure that development efforts are carried out in a fair and equitable manner across regions and communities. It emphasizes the reduction of socio-economic disparities and the provision of equal opportunities for all Indonesians.
  4. Strengthening national resilience and governance: This pillar highlights the importance of building a strong and resilient nation. It encompasses efforts to enhance governance, uphold the rule of law, and reinforce national security and defense capabilities.

 

To realize these pillars, it is crucial to cultivate a superior generation of Indonesian human resources through quality education. Universities play a significant role in this process. Merely producing academically intelligent graduates is insufficient. Universities should also prioritize the development of soft skills that are in demand in the current job market. These skills include critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, collaboration, and other cognitive abilities.

The advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution has transformed various aspects of our lives. It has introduced innovations such as supercomputers, smart robots, big data systems, genetic engineering, and neurotechnology advancements. These advancements require individuals to optimize their brain function and adapt to the changing landscape of work and society.

The millennial generation plays a crucial role in supporting Indonesia’s development in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In this context, there are four critical factors for the success of the millennial generation: innovation, digital literacy, entrepreneurial spirit, and collaboration. These traits are essential for navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In the case of Aceh Province, these qualities are particularly significant for driving development and improving the welfare of its people.

Aceh is blessed with abundant natural resources, including biodiversity, oil and gas, and agriculture. However, it is important to note that despite these resources, Aceh still faces challenges in translating its wealth into meaningful contributions to the welfare of its people. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Aceh is currently the poorest province in Sumatra. To address this issue, one key solution lies in enhancing the quality of education. By improving the educational system, Aceh can effectively develop and empower its human resources, ultimately leading to enhanced quality of life for its residents.

The government’s initiative to launch the Independent Learning Campus program (MBKM) demonstrates its commitment to preparing Indonesia’s younger generation to tackle global challenges effectively. Through MBKM, it is hoped that young Indonesians will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the modern world. The program indirectly fosters the development of soft skills while instilling a strong sense of national pride and love for the country.

In the context of Universitas Samudra, the Chancellor of USK expressed his optimistic belief that the campus will be a breeding ground for a multitude of exceptional generations in Indonesia. The Chancellor placed his confidence in today’s graduates, envisioning them as catalysts for positive change within society.
